GlaxoSmithKline Harbor Avenue Plant, Memphis, TN
Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit
The GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Harbor Avenue Plant includes 3 buildings on President's Island in Memphis, TN that encompass a total floor areas of approximately 295,000 sf. The original facility was constructed in 1963 and the two adjacent additions were constructed in 1965. The 1963 building underwent major expansions in 1969, 1985, and 1988.
CCS Group was part of the Team contracted by GSK to assess the seismic risk at the Harbor Avenue Plant. The seismic evaluation was completed in 3 projects that extended from 2013 to 2017. The original seismic assessment included evaluation of the buildings and nonstructural components using ASCE/SEI 31-03 evaluation criteria. The main production facility was evaluated for Immediate Occupancy performance, while the two adjacent facilities were evaluated for Life Safety performance. In 2015, the seismic assessment was updated to reflect the following changes:
In 2016-2017, CCS Group developed Construction Documents for seismically bracing the fire protection systems at the Harbor Avenue Plant. Extensive site visits were conducted to As-built the fire protection pipe locations.

In 2015, the seismic assessment was updated to reflect the following changes:
- Performance objective changed from Immediate Occupancy to the Basic Safety Objective for existing buildings (combined Life Safety / Collapse Prevention objective)
- Update evaluation criteria from ASCE/SEI 31-03 to ASCE/SEI 41-13
- Construction projects at the facility that included the removal of some nonstructural components that were identified for strengthening during the original seismic evaluation
- Incorporation of isolated nonstructural strengthening during several renovation projects
