MLGW Water Quality Assurance Lab, Memphis, TN
Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit
The project consisted of renovating the existing 1993 building with upgrades and improvements to architectural, mechanical and laboratory systems, as well as a new lobby / entrance addition. The building and nonstructural components were evaluated to bring into compliance with current seismic design requirements.
Seismic Evaluation of the Existing Water Quality Assurance Laboratory Building
The existing building and nonstructural components were seismically evaluated using ASCE/SEI 47-13 using a Tier 1 evaluation and then a deficiency-only, Tier 2 evaluation. Performance objectives included Life Safety for the building and Position Retention for nonstructural components.
Strengthening Design for the Building and Nonstructural Components
Strengthening measures were designed using ASCE/SEI 47-13, Tier 3 procedures. New Intermediate Reduced Bending Section (RBS) Moment Frames were designed and integrated into the existing steel framing at the building perimeter.
Construction Administration and Inspection Services
CCS Group provided construction support, submittal reviews, responded to field questions (RFIs), performed field observations and special inspections. Construction was phased and completed while maintaining functionality of the Water Laboratory.
