US Fish & Wildlife Service
Seismic Safety Evaluations
Seismic evaluations have been performed for 30 US Fish & Wildlife facilities located across the United States at National Fish Hatcheries, National Wildlife Refuges, and at the National Conservation Training Center. Facilities have been located in regions of low, moderate and high seismicity with occupancies ranging from office and residential, to hatcheries, maintenance facilities, and utility services. More than half of the buildings have been unreinforced masonry construction. Other construction types that have been encountered include: reinforced masonry, steel braced frames, concrete moment frames, precast concrete shear walls, and strap braced cold formed steel.
Seismic evaluations were performed using ASCE/SEI 41-13 criteria with a life safety performance objective. Tier 1 evaluations were completed to identify potential seismic deficiencies for the buildings and nonstructural components. Deficiency-only Tier 2 evaluations were performed as necessary to further evaluate the potential seismic deficiencies identified in Tier 1. Schematic strengthening measures were designed that formed the basis for development of budget-level cost estimates to bring the facilities into compliance with the life safety performance objective. Comprehensive reports were prepared to document the seismic evaluation, recommendations for seismic strengthening, and preliminary cost estimates.
